Steve Stacey was the first African-American to play professional football in the UK, signing for Bristol City FC in 1961. Steve was born in Southmead Hospital in August 1944. His father was a black American GI based in Bristol and his mother was a white Bristolian from Horfield. They met at a time when mixed race marriage was forbidden by the American  military.

This learning resource explores themes from Steve Stacey’s story and includes insights from Dr Madge Dresser and film footage from 8th Sense Media.
